Cinco de Mayo and Turkish Parades a No Show
The 2014 Cinco de Mayo parade in Manhattan was cancelled without warning this year. Organizers could not be reached for comment but there were plenty of disappointed spectators, vendors, and photographers who voiced their unhappiness along the parade route on Sunday, May 4th, 2014.
Likewise, the Turkish Day Parade schedule for Sunday, May 18th, 2014 also did not take place.
Our photographers and editors rely on the New York City Department of Transportation's street closing announcements for news of impending parades. Since parade organizers must secure a permit and pay the city for cleaning and police services we assumed the DOT was on top of the situation and the information they publish would be the most accurate available. Not true. DOT listed street closings for both these parades on their Web site and in their weekly e-mail blasts but as our disappointed photographers can attest, the parades did not happen.
We urge the DOT to supply the public with more accurate information on their Web site and in their e-mail communications.
